8 July 2026
Five level crossings between Buxton and Colo Vale will be reactivated on 22 July as part of the Loop Line Upgrade Project.
The reactivation is an important milestone that enables the final steps in construction on the project, allowing rail construction vehicles and later Ballast trains to pass through the line. In addition, the reactivation of the level crossings will enable THNSW to undertake testing and training of crews along the new portion of the line once construction wraps up later this year.
The level crossings that will be reactivated are at the following locations:
East Parade (Buxton South) Level Crossing
Balmoral Village Level Crossing
Railway Parade (Balmoral South) Level Crossing
Coates Road (Hill Top) Level Crossing
Fitzroy Street (Hill Top) Level Crossing
THNSW has undertaken significant work to improve safety and accessibility at each level crossing for the local community, with a range of improvements to visibility and road surface conditions to ensure safe passage for both trains and cars along the route.
In addition, THNSW is currently installing three new pedestrian level crossings at key points along the line to give the local community improved on-foot access across the track.
Road rules are changing at these locations. Drivers will need to ensure they follow all new signs and road rules for level crossings. This means vehicles must stop at the signs and check for trains, before moving through the crossing. Fines will be enforceable at these crossings.
The Loop Line Upgrade Project is proudly funded by the NSW Government and is an exciting project that will reactivate one of the most legendary and storied rail corridors in the history of the NSW Railways. It will enhance the financial sustainability of the NSW Rail Museum, maximising its ability to educate the community on the state's rail and transport history.
The new line will also create a unique range of heritage rail experiences which cannot be duplicated elsewhere in Australia, bringing the region to life with interstate visitors and eventually international visitors.
