Visitors read the new interpretation, developed with support from the Transport Heritage Grants Program
Congratulations to the team at Finley Pioneer Railway Museum Inc. on the successful reopening of the restored Finley Railway Station.
Despite threatening weather, more than 100 people recently gathered to celebrate the occasion. The reopening brought together former railway staff, longtime locals, and those who helped establish the museum, highlighting the strong ongoing connection between the railway and the Finley community.
Over the past two years, Finley Pioneer Railway Museum Inc. has worked closely with THNSW on the site’s revitalisation. Works undertaken have included critical roof repairs, carpentry, repainting inside and out, and improvements to the station gardens.
Separately, this work has also been supported by a Transport Heritage Grant to refresh the displays and interpretation of the site.
The Finley branch line once played an important role in connecting the southern Riverina community to the broader NSW rail network, supporting the movement of passengers, grain and agricultural products across the region. While trains no longer run to Finley, the station remains an important reminder of the town’s railway heritage and the role rail played in shaping regional NSW communities.
Supported through NSW Government Funding Stream 2 administered by THNSW, this revitalisation project is a great example of local heritage groups working to preserve and reactivate important pieces of regional transport history for the enjoyment of future generations.
The station building is just one of many on the rail precinct; THNSW is continuing to work with Finley Pioneer Railway Museum Inc. on a suite of upcoming conservation work on other structures such as the goods shed and gantry crane.
Well done to everyone involved in bringing the station back to life.
