Locomotive 3801 completes load trials

Locomotive 3801 has returned to steam for the first time in more than two years at THNSW’s Fleet Maintenance Workshop in Thirlmere ahead of its scheduled return to service.

This significant milestone marks the completion of extensive technical assessments, maintenance and repair works, and targeted safety upgrades to support the locomotive’s return to mainline operations.

Work on the locomotive has included realignment of the driving wheels, replacement of the motion gear, and preparatory work for the future roller bearing replacement. In addition, train visibility (lighting) upgrades have been installed in compliance with the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) Code of Practice.

The locomotive has since successfully completed load trials on the Loop Line at the NSW Rail Museum in Thirlmere and will undertake mainline trials before it returns to heritage operations.

As an asset owned by the NSW Government through the Transport Asset Manager of NSW (TAM), 3801’s return has been made possible through ongoing government investment in preserving and operating the State’s transport heritage collection for the benefit of the community.

The return of 3801 demonstrates the value of collaboration across the heritage rail sector and industry partners, with THNSW’s Fleet Maintenance Team working alongside TAM, industry specialist Downer, engineering contractor Leussink, and dedicated volunteers to preserve and celebrate NSW’s rail heritage.

Stay tuned for details of upcoming 3801 events, including soon-to-be-announced experiences.
