Following a series of successful steam, load and mainline trials over recent weeks, legendary steam locomotive 3801 will return to passenger service next month for the first time in more than two years.

The locomotive's return follows an extensive program of technical assessments, maintenance and repair works, targeted safety upgrades, and a testing program that has seen the engine successfully complete trials on both the NSW Rail Museum Loop Line and the mainline to Wollongong and return.

Known as the "Legend of Steam", locomotive 3801 remains one of Australia's most iconic and recognisable locomotives and continues to play an important role in preserving and sharing NSW's rail heritage with the community.

Passengers will once again have the opportunity to travel behind 3801 at the following events:

  • Penrith Steam Train Rides – 25 & 26 July 2026

  • Blue Mountains Flyer – 1 & 2 August 2026

  • Newcastle Flyer – 19 & 20 September 2026

  • Transport Heritage Expo – October Long Weekend 2026

The return of 3801 marks a significant milestone for the State Heritage Collection and reflects the dedication of THNSW's Fleet Maintenance Team, volunteers and industry partners who have worked together to prepare the locomotive for its return to service.

Tickets for upcoming events are either on sale now or will be released shortly. Visit the THNSW Experiences page to secure your seats, or learn more about locomotive 3801.
