The Collection

From the earliest tools used to build Sydney’s first railway in 1849 to the Southern Hemisphere’s largest operating steam locomotive, the THNSW Collection charts the evolution of transport and its impact on the state’s development.

Transport Heritage NSW is proud to care for two major collections — the THNSW Collection and the State Movable Heritage Collection — along with items from the Powerhouse Collection and the State Operational Heritage Fleet. Together, these collections connect the community with the history of land-based public transport in NSW, highlighting how it has shaped the state and continues to inspire unique heritage experiences. While the focus has traditionally been on the railways, the scope now extends to other forms of mass, land-based transport, with the collection continuing to grow. You can explore the THNSW Collection online through our digital collection management portal.
