Locomotive 3265 returns following overhaul

After months of intensive work and testing, Locomotive 3265 has officially returned to service, marking a major milestone for Transport Heritage NSW and a proud moment for the team behind its overhaul.

As part of THNSW’s longstanding working relationship with the Powerhouse Museum, the overhaul of 3265 has been one of the most significant undertaken on the locomotive in recent years.

Our fleet maintenance team has carried out extensive work to ensure the locomotive is fit for many years of operation ahead, including retubing the boiler, repairing and correcting corrosion in the tender tank, comprehensive mechanical and operational checks and a full repaint of the locomotive, consistent with its historical maroon livery.

The result is a locomotive that not only looks exceptional, but is operationally robust and ready to perform across the network.

Safety upgrades for modern operations

As part of the overhaul, 3265 has also been fitted with upgraded lighting, bringing the locomotive in line with the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) Code of Practice on train visibility.

The new lighting system was recently tested along the Loop Line at the NSW Rail Museum, ensuring it meets required standards before returning to main line service.

Back in service

3265 made its return to passenger operations during April school holiday steam train rides at the NSW Rail Museum.

Following final rounds of testing, the locomotive has now been cleared for main line operations and has officially rejoined the active heritage fleet. In a fitting return, 3265 will lead a range of journeys at this year’s Hunter Valley Steamfest and operate alongside locomotive 3526 on the Steamfest Flyer to Maitland.

This pairing promises to be a standout moment, showcasing the power and heritage of NSW steam in full flight along the Central Coast-Newcastle and Hunter Lines.

Recognising the team behind the work

This achievement reflects months of dedication, craftsmanship and technical expertise by THNSW’s fleet maintenance team. Their work ensures that locomotives like 3265 continue to operate safely, reliably and authentically, connecting current and future generations with NSW’s rich rail heritage.
