Following its withdrawal from heritage service in 2007, Transport Heritage NSW proudly undertook and completed the restoration of legend of steam locomotive 3801, returning it to service on 12 March 2021.

Rejuvinating a steam giant

Locomotive 3801 was withdrawn from heritage service in 2007 to undergo major boiler works. At the time, a decision was made to construct a brand new boiler, with a German manufacturer engaged through an international tender process.

The new boiler arrived in Australia in 2010, however subsequent assessments identified a number of technical issues, including non-compliance with Australian Standards. As a result, it was returned to Germany in 2011.

In late 2014, a Steering Committee comprising representatives from Transport for NSW and the newly established Transport Heritage NSW resolved to bring the boiler back to Australia to enable closer oversight and management of the works.

Getting back on track

The new boiler arrived in Australia in January 2015. At that time, THNSW specialists undertook detailed inspections of both the new boiler and the original boiler, which had been removed from locomotive 3801 following its withdrawal from service in 2007.

Following assessment, a decision was made to repair and return the original boiler to operational condition, supported by a comprehensive program of works to meet modern safety and certification requirements and enable the locomotive’s timely return to service.

Repairs were completed by Ainsworths of Goulburn, with the boiler returning to Chullora in July 2019. It was subsequently reunited with the locomotive and certified for operation later that year.

A legend returns

Locomotive 3801 was officially relaunched at Sydney’s Central Station on 12 March 2021 by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales.

More than 1,500 passengers were among the first to travel behind 3801 since 2007, as it returned to the Sydney Trains network with a series of commemorative steam journeys—despite strict COVID-era social distancing restrictions that constrained capacity well below demand.

Since its return to service, 3801 has re-established itself as the flagship of the NSW operational heritage fleet, operating across the network for major events and special journeys. In 2022, it made history once again, crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the first time.

Today, 3801 continues to play a central role in connecting new audiences with NSW’s rail heritage—regularly featuring in high-profile mainline operations, public programs and

statewide events, and remaining one of the most recognised and celebrated locomotives in Australia.
