Transport Heritage NSW will be upgrading and resurfacing five level crossings along the historic Loop Line, as part of the rail corridor reactivation between Buxton and Colo Vale.

These improvements are designed to enhance safety for both the community and the heritage trains that will operate on the line.

The works will deliver safer and more reliable level crossings, with improved road surfacing, clearer road markings, updated signage, and better visibility. These upgrades will also support the safe operation of heritage train services along the reactivated route.

Each level crossing will need to be temporarily closed during its upgrade. To reduce the impact on the community, only one crossing will be closed at a time, and closure durations will be kept as short as possible.

Detours will be in place for vehicles during the works, so residents and businesses are encouraged to plan alternative routes in advance. Traffic control staff will be on site to safely escort pedestrians across the level crossings as needed. Specific dates and closure durations are subject to weather conditions and will be clearly displayed on roadside variable message boards leading up to each location.

During works, there will be an increase in truck movements and temporary changes to traffic conditions. There will also be periods of normal construction noise and dust from plant and machinery. This includes excavators, power tools and reversing beepers. Dust will be kept to a minimum using water sprayers.

This section of the Loop Line is once again an active railway corridor. Whilst trains are yet to return, track maintenance vehicles may pass through level crossings on rail at any time. It is essential to prioritise safety when approaching or near the line. Follow road rules when using level crossings. Specifically, stop signs will be installed which require road users to “stop as near as practicable to, but before reaching, the stop line and give way to any train approaching or entering the crossing”.
