Transport Heritage NSW was proud to steam locomotive 3801 back into Canberra earlier this month. Over 3,800 passengers travelled with THNSW behind the legend of steam taking in the scenic Molonglo Gorge along the way.
Canberra was one of 3801's first destinations since it returned to passenger service this winter. Its return followed an extensive program of maintenance, safety upgrades and testing by our Fleet Maintenance Team, volunteers and industry partners. It was also the first time in more than 20 years that 3801 operated into Canberra.
On Friday 4 September, THNSW ran longer return journeys to Bungendore, with afternoon and evening departures. Over the weekend, shorter trips ran to Burbong and return, taking passengers through Molonglo Gorge.
Passengers could choose open saloon seating or a private compartment and travelled in heritage carriages from the State Heritage Collection. Families, rail enthusiasts and first-time steam travellers filled the platform. Many more people lined the route and gathered at vantage points along the gorge to see 3801 pass.
THNSW delivered the visit in partnership with the Canberra Railway Museum, whose volunteers provided invaluable support on the ground throughout the weekend. If you enjoyed your time in Canberra, we encourage you to visit the museum and learn more about the capital's rich railway history.
About 3801
Built in 1943, 3801 was the first of the famous 38 class express passenger locomotives. It is streamlined and capable of 115 km/h, and in 1964 it set a speed record between Sydney and Newcastle. It remains the only steam locomotive to have visited every mainland state and territory in Australia, and it is the flagship of the NSW Heritage Fleet.

What's next for 3801
After Canberra, 3801 is set to haul the Newcastle Flyer on 19 and 20 September and feature at the 2026 Transport Heritage Expo over the October long weekend.
We'd like to thank the Canberra Railway Museum, [operating partners – confirm], our dedicated volunteers and crew, and everyone who joined us for a memorable three days in the capital.
