Transport Heritage NSW is partnering with the NSW Government to deliver the Chullora Heritage Hub: a new storage and maintenance facility for transport heritage assets.
A new centre for transport heritage
The Chullora Heritage Hub will unlock multiple exciting opportunities for the future of rail heritage in NSW
Moving to Chullora will provide Transport Heritage NSW space for collection items stored at Eveleigh and Broadmeadow. This means these items will have proper state-of-the-art storage, protecting them for future generations.
Stage two of the project will provide a large workshop for restoration projects and ongoing maintenance. These facilities will also provide ready access to the main line rail network for more efficient, growing heritage rail operations across steam, electric and diesel.
The new hub will also potentially provide much-needed facilities for other recognised heritage operators, giving them an opportunity for space and resources.
This centralised site will promote knowledge sharing and skill development across a range of disciplines and transport modes, securing the future of our state's transport history.
Stage one: Tank Annex Building
Stage One of the Chullora Heritage Hub was delivered in early 2024, with the completion of the refurbished Tank Annex Building and relocation of collection items.
This world class facility now provides safe and proper storage for a variety of collection items, including rolling stock and small objects, previously located at Thirlmere, Eveleigh and Broadmeadow.
Stage two: locomotive workshop
Stage Two of the Chullora Heritage Hub is focused on the former Locomotive Workshop.
Plans include:
Large workshop for restoration projects and ongoing maintenance.
Easy access to the main line network for more efficient heritage train operations.
Potential for other recognised heritage transport groups to have a presence at the new hub.
Knowledge sharing and skill development.
Stage Two is yet to commence and is subject to further review by the NSW Government.
