SYDNEY'S FIRST DOUBLE DECKER CARRIAGES

The four-car vintage suburban electric train set W3 was the first production train to feature power-operated “safety doors”, and the first set to use double-deck carriages in Sydney.

One of the double-deck carriages in set W3, T4801, was the very first double-deck car to enter service on 1st March 1964. These innovative cars were of lightweight aluminium construction on steel underframes with air-ride bogies for better riding qualities. Car T4814 represents the balance of the 120 double-deck carriages built at Tulloch Limited of Rhodes between 1964 and 1968.

The two single-deck carriages in set W3 were built at Commonwealth Engineering near Granville in 1958. They were the final development of the singledeck suburban electric cars, with all-welded steel construction and four traction motors per car. They were known as “Sputnik” cars as their introduction coincided with the launch of the satellite by that name.

In Preservation

In 1975 their interiors were converted from incandescent pendant globes to fluorescent lights. Set W3 is painted to represent the transition in suburban train colour schemes from the 1950s to the 1980s and their respective state government authorities (Department of Railways, Public Transport Commission and the State Rail Authority).

Set W3 was restored by volunteers at Historic Electric Traction and will soon return to service for heritage train experiences in partnership with Sydney Trains and Transport Heritage NSW.
