THE OLDEST OPERATING CARRIAGES IN NSW

The CBC/HX Carriages, more commonly known by their nickname the Pullman cars, arose from a decision by the New South Wales Railways to order a batch of 8 passenger cars from the Pullman Palace Company in 1890. These cars proved successful and gave rise to a series of locally built carriages based on the Pullman design.

The carriages are constructed almost entirely of timber, and are some of the most ornate in the State collection, featuring pressed-metal ceilings, clerestory roofs, crown lights, and polished nickel and brass fittings. With their ornate fittings they would come to be used on services to the Queensland and Victorian border which were key services on the New South Wales Railways when this type of carriage entered service.

HX 1006 entered traffic in October 1899 whilst the CBC cars would enter service in October 1902.

One of the most prominent services to use “Pullman” cars would be the Northern Commercial Limited from 1936 until being replaced by N type cars which are also preserved by the NSW Rail Museum. After service on these prodigious trains the Pullman carriages would enter general services and see use on less high profile services.

From movie sets to historic events

The Pullman carriages are significant, having formed the Vintage Train which operated from October 1960 to March 1974. The Vintage Train was a public relations and education initiative by the NSW Government Railways, which saw the set travel to all corners of NSW for the benefit and enjoyment of local communities. This tradition has been carried forward since by the NSW Rail Transport Museum and now Transport Heritage NSW.

The Pullman cars have participated in a number of historic events since entering preservation including participating in the 75th Anniversary of the Newcastle Flyer in 2004 and the 150th Anniversary of the NSW Railways the following year.

The carriages have also made appearances in film, including in the 2013 blockbuster film ‘Unbroken’, starring Angelina Jolie. The film was shot in Werris Creek, NSW and would see the cars hauled by historic diesel locomotives.
