THE LAST REMAINING OF ITS CLASS

Built by A Goninan and Co in Broadmeadow, the six members of the 43 Class visually followed in the footsteps of the streamlined 42 Class, but with internals produced by the American Locomotive Company (ALCo) - a unique combination in any class of Australian diesel locomotive.

With its early diesel orders, the NSW Railways dallied with small orders from a handful of local and overseas builders, before all but settling on a fleet of near-standard Alco mainline diesels over the ensuring decades.

The 43 Class were introduced from 1956 with sights focused on their use on services between Sydney and Orange. With the electrification of the line to Lithgow in 1957 enabling electric-hauled services, the locomotives were transferred to work on the northern routes, taking over services at Gosford and travelling as far as the Queensland Border on both the North Coast and inland Main North routes.

In Preservation

Withdrawals of the class began from 1975, when class leader 4301 was ultimately scrapped to provide spare parts for the remaining five locomotives.

4306 was the last of its class to be withdrawn from service in 1979 with the introduction of the 80 Class, and the Public Transport Commission placed the locomotive in heritage custody. It was moved to the NSW Rail Transport Museum in Thirlmere shortly thereafter, where it was made available on static display.

In 1986, volunteers based in the Illawarra began works to return the locomotive to service, with 4306 successfully returning to operation a decade later.

Today, locomotive 4306 forms part of the State Operational Heritage Fleet, where it assists with a range of heritage operations and events across the state.
